After a long struggle of seventeen years (1985-2003), the people of Shimshal work hard and sacrificed their lives in the construction of road to cut the hard rock in the difficult range of Karakoram. AKRSP started the project in 1985 and constructed about 16 kilometers road and than handover to the Government of Pakistan, different portion was constructed by different contactors and the road completed in 2003.
The opening ceremony of Shimshal road was held on 25th October 2004. A large number of Government officials, Institutions head, and all the local community of Gojal Hunza were invited in the opening ceremony. The comunity of Shimshal, Shimshal Nature Trust (SNT), Volunteers, Boy Scouts, Girls Guides and other community-based organizations organized the ceremony in very good discipline. Passu Volunteers also rendered their services to organize the ceremony. The people of Shimshal are famous for their rich culture and hospitality in the entire Hunza Valley. Shimshal was decorated with different colors of flags and welcome banners were displayed at many places on new Shimshal road. The snow covered peak of Dastegir (7,785m) and the valley of Shimshal (10,100 ft) was smiling in the beautiful autumn season. Chief Secretary Northern Area was the chief guest of the opening ceremony.
